Skipper’s Diary Alimos: A Charter Week – Day 3

Skipper’s Diary Alimos: A Charter Week – Day 3
Departing Poros – A Morning of Smooth Sailing
The third day of our Skipper’s Diary Alimos adventure begins with a calm morning in Poros. The harbor is peaceful as the first sunlight reflects off the neoclassical buildings lining the waterfront. After a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit, Greek pastries, and strong coffee, we prepare the yacht for today’s journey. The goal: an 18-nautical-mile sail to Hydra, one of the most enchanting islands in the Saronic Gulf.
The sea is calm, with a steady 10-knot breeze from the northwest, making for a comfortable and scenic crossing. Guests are becoming more confident in their sailing skills, taking turns at the helm and adjusting the sails. Along the way, we pass the rugged coastline of the Peloponnese, enjoying breathtaking views of cliffs and hidden coves.

Arriving in Hydra – A Step Back in Time
By early afternoon, we approach Hydra Town, a harbor that looks like something from a painting. The first thing guests notice is the absence of cars—Hydra is one of the few Greek islands where motor vehicles are banned. Instead, donkeys and water taxis serve as the main modes of transport, preserving the island’s old-world charm.
After securing a mooring in the bustling harbor, we step ashore to explore. The narrow, winding streets are filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and quaint cafés. Some guests visit the Historical Archives Museum, which details Hydra’s significant role in Greece’s naval history. Others opt for a leisurely walk up the stone paths leading to Kaminia, a smaller, quieter settlement with breathtaking sea views.

Swimming in Hydra’s Crystal-Clear Waters
Unlike many Greek islands, Hydra doesn’t have sandy beaches, but it makes up for this with its spectacular rocky swimming spots. We take a short boat ride to Saint Nicholas Beach, a secluded paradise with crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling and diving. The adventurous guests take the opportunity to cliff jump, while others relax in the sun, enjoying the stunning surroundings.
Sunset Dining in Hydra – A True Culinary Experience
As evening falls, we dine at Ostria Restaurant, one of Hydra’s top-rated tavernas, known for its incredible seafood and romantic harbor views. The menu includes lobster pasta, grilled seabream, and fresh octopus, all paired with a chilled glass of local white wine. The atmosphere is magical, with the harbor lights reflecting off the water and soft Greek music playing in the background.
Back on board, the gentle rocking of the yacht lulls everyone into a state of pure relaxation. The evening ends with quiet conversations on deck as we gaze at the endless stars above, appreciating another unforgettable day.
